New Archeologies, 2025

In his work New Archeologies, Stadler uses a generative model to create images of measuring charts, colour scales, and reference grids: tools used in reproduction photography – or for scientific purposes – to represent something measurable in an image. At first glance, these generated instruments appear usable, but in their concrete application, they prove obsolete. They escape any real function, as they do not exist in this form outside the image itself. The AI recombines symbols and codes drawn from image databases into new speculative systems.(System A )

Using techniques such as double exposure and collage on negative and positive film, Stadler integrates these synthetic images into analogue photographs taken with his own camera. Images of remote landscapes, forests, and natural environments contrast with the technological imagery. In this context, the instruments reflect not only rational attempts to perceive reality, but also the desire for control and clarity in a chaotic world. ‘The world is number’ runs through the project as a recurring motif, pointing to the relationship between abstraction and deep understanding.

The frames of New Archeologies are made from welded and polished aluminium and glass. They were designed and produced by the artist specifically for this series.

This project was supported by Pro Helvetia.
